It isn’t only financial markets that make forecasts at the start of a new year.
In China, the turn of the calendar has always carried weight. Each year associated with an animal is said to signal fortune or difficulty ahead.
These beliefs have been taken seriously for centuries – shaping decisions about marriage, business, and even when children are born, based on expectations about the character of the times to come.
This year, however, marks something more unusual than the routine turning of an annual cycle.
It coincides with the year of the Fire Horse.
Why the calendar year still scares people in China
I don’t usually place much emphasis on Chinese zodiac years – it’s not my area of expertise.
But the Fire Horse is worth a mention, not because of symbolism, but because it aligns with a full 60-year cycle.
It’s also seen as a year of trouble, volatility, or excess – and it’s happening at the peak of this land cycle!
The Horse symbolises speed, restlessness, and defiance. Fire amplifies that.
The combination is thought to produce impulsive behaviour, conflict, and events that escalate faster than expected.
