Land cycle lessons from the rise and fall of Hugh Glass, the wealthiest speculator in 19th Century Victoria.

I came across a fantastic article this week on Fat Tail Daily by Ryan Dinse, who brilliantly touches on the history of Hugh Glass. You can check it out here—Ryan provides an insightful summary.


But Glass’s story deserves more attention, especially in light of how the 18-year land cycle shaped Victoria in the 1800s.


In any telling of Victoria’s history, Hugh Glass stands out. Once the richest man in the region, he manipulated the land system to his advantage, pulling off some remarkable deals.


Yet, despite his wealth and cunning, Glass died destitute.


What went wrong?


As anyone with knowledge of the land cycle knows, timing is everything!


The takeaway: Never over-leverage yourself during the final stages of a land cycle!
